Psalm 46:10 Be still and know that I am God! Reading these words I am mindful of how many times I have heard them repeated like a quick fix and thought: I hear the letter of the law but the experience of this eludes me. Reflecting on them now I am aware that: in context there is more here then meets the eye, and I am compelled to dig a little deeper.
Ps. 46:1-5 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
Strengthened by the truth I am spelled by the depth of His rest there in. Looking at the word Selah it refers to: tranquil, secure, at rest, silence, pause, quiet, peaceful, serene and prosperous. Metaphorically it is the state of mind in prayer, in which we relinquish our thoughts of what, when, where, why and how to pray: and wait on the Holy Spirit.
1Cor.2:9-16 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither has entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searches all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knows no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Ghost teaches; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
We have the mind of Christ...What a statement! What a provision. Yet with that I am mindful of Mosses and how he must have felt in:
Ex.1-6 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said: Here am I. And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou stand is holy ground. Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
Lev.20:7-8 Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God. And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the LORD which sanctify you.
Recently we have been exhorted to look at our strategy or game plan to stand in time of need. For me that place of strength can only be in and through him.
Psalm 124 A Song of degrees of David. If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say; If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us: Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us: Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul: Then the proud waters had gone over our soul. Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth. Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped. Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth. Amen and Amen
